G-Side – Island
13 November |

I was first introduced to G-Side back in November of 2008 when they were featured on “Real Good”, a track from the Paper Route Gangstaz near classic “Fear & Loathing In Huntsvegas” mixtape. Four albums, three years and countless guest features later, ST 2 Lettaz and Yung Clova are still grinding like they have something to prove and it shows more than ever on their newest release, “Island”. On their second album of the year, the Huntsville, Alabama duo sounds more focused than ever with an even more refined version of the groundbreaking sound these guys are known for. With help from The Block Beataz, one of the most consistant production teams in the game, “Island” is miles away from anything out right now, which is why the title is so appropriate. Musically, they really are “on an island by themselves”.

“Island” Trailer 1

I can’t even tell you how blown away I was when I heard Joy Orbison’s “Hyph Mngo” sampled in “No U In US” or when I found out that Tame Impala was sampled for “Gettin’ It”, the Stalley assisted banger that teased us back in September. Maybe I’m just a sucker for genre crossing collaborations or maybe it’s a breathe of fresh air for in an industry that’s known for pumping out cookie cutter artists with no longevity. Either way, G-Side has prided themselves on staying independent, which enables them to control their creative visions and in turn, make the music that they WANT to make. They were recently featured on Forbes.com to discuss the benefits of Bandcamp along with their unique marketing strategy so they’re obviously doing something right. No major label backing, high profile industry co-signs or fancy public appearances. Just high quality, organic music that represents their own little island that they call Huntsville. If you can’t respect that, your whole perspective is whack.

Watch the ST 2 Lettaz directed video for “Rabbits”, the duos inadvertent nod to the classic Goodie Mobb/Outkast era of Hip-Hop.

Update: Continuing to keep the buzz on heavy, the Huntsville duo releases a video for the Stalley & Joi Tiffany assisted “Gettin’ It”, an undeniable standout from their “Island” LP.
